Win Server 2012 - AD DC or AD LDS in VM - Old dog learning new tricks!

I'm in the process of setting up my new server with Server 2012 Standard to replace our older file server running server 2003, and could use some guidance, particularly regarding Active Directory.

My current network

  • Workgroup
  • Server 1 - Win Server 2003 as file server, print server also running QB database. Has about 17 active user accounts setup.
  • Server 2 - Win Server 2003 running spiceworks and Vipre Business Console (barely has the resources)
  • Server 3 - Win Server 2003 for ShoreTel VOIP
  • 1 Untangle server for DHCP/DNS, OpenVPN and bandwith monitoring, etc.
  • 16 workstations/laptops - Two of the laptops work remotely some of the time and one of the workstations works remotely all the time via VPN
  • 2 Network Printer/Copy machines

I think that about covers it - except switches and wireless network which probably doesn't apply to this post.

After reading many posts, blogs and TechNet instructions, I've determined that I should be virtualizing since the new server has the resources and also should go ahead and implement AD.

My thought is to run the AD as a VM and run the File Server, Print Server, Database on the second VM. But I'm not sure if I should implement AD DC or AD LDS.

  • What is the trade off in benefits if I choose AD LDS instead of DC? I hear spiceworks only integrates with AD DC not LDS.
  • If I go with a domain controller , can it pull DNS from the Untangle gateway or do I need to configure it as a DNS server? I found this article - and this one - but I'm still left confused about how the DNS will work with my existing gateway.
  • What about the users who remote in? How does a domain controller affect their desktop experience when they are not connected to the local network?
  • What is the best way to migrate each user to the domain, keeping their desktop info intact? This is very important...my boss's don't like it when his desktop changes.

AD and Virtualization are both new topics to me. Actually, I set up a domain controller as a home project back in the 90's with NT4... that's about it. So any info, links to instructional, will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
